The SUNSET V is a trawler built in 1983. She has a raked bow, open fore deck, slightly raised forecastle and a center deck house, set amidships leading aft. The original transom has been lengthened by six feet and the original three feet bolted on aft swim platform has been incorporated in the design of the new stern.

The boat is a round bilge design with full length deep draft keel and a rudder held on a fixed skeg. It is powered with a single Caterpillar 3406 D1 engine rebuilt in 2005 at 7441 documented hrs..  Now the engine has 2800 hours since rebuilt.

The hull is stiffened with webs, floors, bulkhead and joinery flanges which have all been removed and replaced during the last refit.

The hull is made of solid fiberglass from the bottom up to one foot above waterline. The balsa cored hull above the waterline has been removed and replaced with 1-1/2" thick Corecell® closed cell foam covered on the outside with an average 28 layers of hand laid vacuum bagged fiberglass material saturated with epoxy resin.

The superstructure is made of molded fiberglass fitted with watertight doors. Access to the engine room is via a watertight door on main deck or a freeman watertight hatch on aft deck.

Below main deck, the vessel is divided in five watertight compartments being the forward void and chain locker, living area, engine room, steering compartment and lazarette. All of them are serviced by adequate bilge pumps.

The pilothouse is accessed either by two watertight doors, port and starboard, or by internal access via the main salon. It is finished with oiled Brunsyel teak and the floor is carpeted. Visibility is 360 degrees. An enclosed head with sink is set on the aft starboard side of the pilothouse.

An observer's seat set immediately in front of a pilot berth which lays athwartship. There is also a Pompanette leather pilot chair.

Five full size chart drawers could house an extensive collection of paper charts. A full size chart table is also present in the pilothouse. In addition to all the navigational instruments, the pilot house is equipped with smoke and fire alarm from the engine room.

A flybridge is built on top of the pilothouse with compass, pilot chair, bench seating, bow and stern thruster controls and a complete steering station with full instrumentation for the engine.

The hull bottom was covered with epoxy barrier coat, faired, primed then covered with three coats of bottom paint.

Particular attention has been given to sealing the areas where the bottom of the keel rested on keel blocks which were moved and replaced.

Bronze through-hull fittings and their seacocks have been replaced by new ones and have been properly grounded. Every fitting is provided with wooden cone blocks attached to it.

The vessel features keel coolers for the main engine and the 30 kW generator.

Stainless steel fittings have been fabricated and installed to protect the shaft and the leading edge of the Naïads stabilizers fins from lines and floating objects.

All decks have been rebuilt, faired and painted with Awlgrip non-skid paint. The hull has been faired and painted with Awlgrip 2000 navy blue paint.

All stainless steel added to the vessel is grade 316 and is highly-polished. Care has been taken for the finish of the boat.

Six 12" and eight 15" stainless steel cleats are through-bolted at critical points on the boat deck. Additional three pop-up 6" cleats are installed aft for the dinghy. Seven custom made stainless steel chocks have been installed.
